I thought today we’d look at Website Hosting. I don’t know about you but I was forever getting confused about who I should get to host my site.
I registered with several hosting companies using different domain names just to see what was on offer. To be honest I wasted quite a bit of money doing that and I never really got what I wanted. Then in the early days did I know what I wanted? Well your answer is as good as mine – No!
It quickly became apparent to me that there are many types of packages you can get:
- Just hosting
- Hosting with site builder software of varying types for beginners
- Hosting that lets you manage sites and blogs
- Hosting for e-commerce sites (online shops)
- Limited bandwidth
- Unlimited bandwidth
- One site per account
- Unlimited sites per account
- Free domains with package
- and more…….
What did I really need? Oh yes I better start with the premium do all package and sign up for 3 months!!
Does that ring any bells?
Well what happens then is you’ve got this all singing all dancing hosting package. You know you’ve go to do something with it but what? Where do you start?
I used to look at it, walk away to think – go back in a week or two, then ask a friend, then pay some more cash – then go to someone who can put a site up with little difficulty and guess what they set me up with another hosting package!
My advice to you is to do a bit of research first, decide what the minimum package you need ( you can always upgrade later!) Ask people who they use, who they’ve had problems with etc.
We all have our favourites and there are not too many bad hosting companies out there – it really is that we are trying to do our own thing but don’t know what we want until it’s too late to get out of a contract.
Start small it is only a matter of minutes before an upgrade is activated.
