Review by John A. Suda for Facebook: The Missing Manual
Rating:
The Facebook online social network site has become a phenomenon with over 50 million account holders registered with the "online village." It is easy to open an account and almost immediately set up online relationships with friends, coworkers, and community groups. Like its online rival, MySpace, Facebook's features include easy ways for people and (businesses) to connect via blog features, online groups and networks, photo and video sharing, text messaging and postings, and an elaborate tracking system which stores Facebook's activities and allows access to that data to other FaceBook users and even to others not directly connected with Facebook.

The book, "Facebook: the Missing Manual," is designed primarily for the non-technical computer person who wants to join the fun and business of using Facebook. It is a basic primer describing how to use and enjoy the Facebook features --from registering, setting up a profile, finding and inviting friends to join your personal network, joining groups and networks which share your interests, playing with both silly and serious applications, and using Facebook for business purposes, even for job postings and searching.

The book is a relatively short 268 pages, given its layout of large-sized text, much white space, and the presence of numerous full color screenshots illustrating step-by-step instructions on using Facebook. Geeks and nerds probably will not find much value in this book, but computer neophytes will enjoy its simple, yet comprehensive, approach to its topic.

More importantly, in my view, not just for neophyte users but for many of those already using Facebook, is the books' most useful theme which is learning how to understand the privacy issues involved in using Facebook. Facebook's most salient feature is its activity tracking system which stores data on nearly all Facebook activities and provides ample means of access to that data by other Facebook users, data-mining companies, and even third-party businesses which track off-site consumer activity like shopping, - and up to recently - without a user's active consent .

Once data is entered into a Facebook account, it never disappears, not even after one deactivates the account. For those users comfortable with sharing nearly everything about themselves online - personal information, candid videos and photos, and the like, this state of affairs can have enormous practical consequences either now or later, both good and bad. Facebook's privacy preferences are mostly of the "opt out" nature, so if you don't pay attention to the consequences of even the seemingly most innocuous user configurations--for example, activating any third-party applications no matter how silly, allow the developer full access to your personal data--privacy-related problems can develop.

The book is filled with tips and practical suggestions at every section providing information on what can happen with these your and your friends' data and what steps one can take to protect your privacy expectations. Those tips alone justify the price of the book, for yourself, (or as the case may be), your kids, or grandkids.

This is a common problem faced when we buy online and the developer expect most people know how to configure html. But i think it will work great once it is tested a few more times.

But, it's lacking a 'personalized' email features. we need personalized email with the sender details built in it to get attention in your subscribers inbox.

But, i have and easier suggestion to solve this email marketing misery.

There are two leading products (actually there's more but i just want to highlight these two.

Mailloop and Aweber.

But First let see what email marketing can do,
Here's what this might look like...

3 days after subscribing: sends your "FAQ promotion" -- that deals with the most common pre-sale objections and asks for the order again!

7 days after subscribing: sends your "Package Offer" -- that offers a 25% discount on TWO products, packaged together.

14 days after subscribing: sends a FREE Report that explains the benefits of using your product -- and asks for the order again!

21 days after subscribing: sends a "Success Story" e-mail packed with testimonials from satisfied clients -- and asks for the order again!

30 days after subscribing: sends your "FREE Trial Offer" -- that lets people who haven't bought yet sample your product risk-free!

you know, Its good to go auto pilot.

Mailoop - goes on one time purchase and you get unlimited autoresponder and customize email campaign.

With Aweber, You pay more as your business grow. With limited budget this is great.

But i personally recommends Mailloop.

Look more for Mailloop at http://www.marketingtips.com/mailloop/t.x/893424

and Aweber at http://www.aweber.com/?285139 (with free 30 days test-drive)

I see that others reported problems with Email Campaign but I must say that I haven't had any problems. Then again, I do have a casual knowledge of HTML, which really helps with this product. I'm not an HTML guru, but do know enough about HTML to get by in most situations. With my limited HTML knowledge, Email Campaign works well.

My suggestion: if you want to send HTML email messages and you don't know what you are doing, you might want to avoid Email Campaign. However, if you have at least casual knowledge of the HTML basics, I think you'll find that Email Campaign is a good product for you. The previous comments were obviously written by people who do not know HTML.

You will need a good SMTP service. Email Campaign only works with external SMTP services; it does not include a built in SMTP mail server.

Many SMTP mail servers will limit you to 100 or perhaps 400 email messages per day. If you plan to send more, look for a service that specializes in higher volumes. I use [...] but there may be others as well.

Of course, all the reputable SMTP services will disable your account if you send spam, as they should.

Horrible, just horrible.
I bought this because MAC Leopard only comes with a few design templates and none fit my needs, so when the box says it has more than 300, how could I go wrong I thought?
These are NOT templates, all nice and neatly laid out. You have to choose a background, a header, a color, etc. But that is NOT what makes this program horrible. It's the fact that you must click on each folder, then another, then another, and yes, one more time, before you get to see a PICTURE of what you want. And if you like it, you better memorize the title perfectly because there are 10 other items just like it.
In this day and age, not having an easily accessible picture for user to see is like someone trying to sell a high price item on craig'slist without a photo. Why even bother.
DO NOT BUY THIS if you are not tech savvy.

If you need this item now, be warned that it took nearly 30 days to receive it. The program sounded like a great idea since I had tried to create my own HTML mass email list without success. Once I installed the program, I thought I would have completed my first email campaign within the hour; including the transfer and organizing of my email list files. I realized immediately that the program requires that you have a URL to link images used by the templates provided. I uploaded the files to my site and went back into the program to begin the task of editing the html, text, entering my mailing list, and providing mail server information. The program is tedious and expects that you know enough about html to adjust the templates or design originals. After spending WAY too much time with this $39 product, it still failed to transfer the template image through the test email. I contacted support 5 days ago and still have no response. As the saying goes; "you get what you pay for".
